How long can you go without health insurance in Massachusetts?
There is a grace period for people who have a gap in coverage. You can go up to 3 consecutive months without penalty, and multiple lapses are allowed within 1 calendar year.
How soon after getting health insurance can you use it?
First day of the month following the month you enroll. If you enroll on the 16th or later, coverage begins in one-and-a-half months.
For example, if you buy health insurance between November 1st and 15th, your coverage will start on December 1st.
What happens if pre-existing conditions are not covered?
Health insurers can no longer charge more or deny coverage to you or your child because of a pre-existing health condition like asthma, diabetes, or cancer. Once you have insurance, they can’t refuse to cover treatment for your pre-existing condition.
